SINGING FOR GOD

Singing For God is a sacred art form that can elevate musicians and singers while healing those who think or believe they do not have a good voice.

It is a practice that transforms the ego, the self, in its direct relationship to the divine.

What will you learn? And why learn it?

"Singing For God" teaches easy singing as meditation and devotional singing that challenges our sense of spiritual intimacy and connection.

The easy parts include fundamental ragas—musical intervals (swaras)—and words accompanying them (sāhitya). In some instances, they are simple exercises that aid devotional vocal expression.

Singing For God is not about singing for groups, although you can take it to them. It is about discovering your most intimate relationship with the divine through engaging in spiritual practice with intimacy. There is no one judging you or grading you.

The singing practices are broken down into easy-to-learn segments with a simple notation system. You will learn kirtans but, more importantly, solo devotional songs, some composed by famous musician saints and mystic poets of the Bhakti tradition like Goswami Tulsidas and Purandara Dasa.

NOTE-BENDING,

& CULTIVATING VOCAL BHAKTI.

What differentiates the voice of Bhakti from other kinds of voices? How does one stimulate Bhakti in the voice? What techniques can a vocalist use to awaken Bhakti in and through the voice? How do we use musical intervals to enhance devotion?

Who is it for? What does it do for us?

In some ways, it says that to connect to divinity, one must genuinely connect to oneself. Although "Singing For God" is built on devotion Bhakti, it does not focus on "call and response" singing. Instead, the practice focuses on singing solo to an invisible presence. The method teaches a unique kind of sonic mysticism and The Yoga of Sound.

WITH OR WITHOUT INSTRUMENTS, YOUR VOICE IS THE KEY!

If you are a musician, feel free to bring your musical instrument to the Zoom sessions so you can pick out the musical intervals. You may also want to use your musical instrument to follow along with the online tutorials.

If you are not a musician, you have the best instrument of them all: your voice! And your voice is the barometer of your soul. With Singing For God, we seek to develop a transparency in our voices that is often missing, particularly in spiritual practice.

In the traditional music of India, it is the human voice that emulates all other instruments. A musical instrument is considered an extension of one's voice through which one expresses the deepest sentiments of the soul.

Non-musicians will learn to use supportive instruments such as the tanpura. If you don't have one or play one, don't worry. You can download a complete set of drones (Seven Drones For Seven Chakras) to assist your practice of Singing For God.

Many musicians do not connect intimately with their musical instruments. They try and produce on the instrument what is in their minds rather than what's in their hearts. Singing For God changes that dynamic.
